A Study on the Effects of Hand Massage and Nail Art on the Depression and Loneliness of the Aged Using Day Care Centers

Abstract
Objective : This study aims to contribute to the development of an efficient and systematic beauty care program that cou ld improve the life qu ality of the aged and also provide comfortable old age to them, by examining the effects of hand massage and nail art on the depression and loneliness of the aged using day care centers, and then suggesting an effective program required for aged society.

Methods : In order to verify the effects of an intervention program for patients using day care centers, the program was conducted. The differences in the scores of depression and loneliness in pre/post tests, were analyzed by using the paired t-test. For the differences in the effects of intervention program in accordance with the general characteristics, the repeated measures ANOVA was used.

Results : The effects of intervention program were not greatly different in accordance with the general characteristics, and overall, the effects of intervention were considerably high to reduce depression. In the same way as the case of depression, the scale of loneliness also showed considerably high effects of the application of intervention program in every group.

Conclusion : The program related to beauty care for patients with mild dementia would have effects on the improvement of depression and loneliness based on psychological stability by the improvement of closeness through a tactile sense of hand massage and the visual effects with the medium of nail art. With the control over various variables and living, more effective results could be expected in the future.
